Passion, Knowledge, Practice = Experience (and success)

The other day I was updating my LinkedIn profile and stumbled upon this parable:

Never underestimate the value of experience!

A giant ship engine failed. The ship’s owners tried one expert after
another, but none of them could figure but how to fix the engine.

Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a young. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship’s owners were there, watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away. The engine was fixed!

A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

“What?!” the owners exclaimed. “He hardly did anything!”
So they wrote the old man a note saying, “Please send us an itemized bill.”

The man sent a bill that read:
Tapping with a hammer………………….. $ 2.00
Knowing where to tap…………………….. $ 9,998.00

My grandfather, a very wise self made man, that started his professional career as paper boy (with a borrowed bike from his neighbor) and became vice president of a now 88 years old newspaper in Brazil, always told me that the formula of success is passion (energy/motivation), knowledge and practice. He also said that I could not just go to work and do things, I had to get my bachelors degree (as I did) and wake up with the same motivation as a new employee every day, for months, years, my whole life like he did.

When I visited for the first time the Metropolitan Museum, I was fascinated by the things I saw there. But one old quote (over 2400 year old) from a Greet General and Historian made me pause and read a few times:

“We are lovers of beauty yet with no extravagance and lovers of wisdom yet without weakness. Wealth we employ rather as an opportunity for action than as a subject for boasting; and with us it is not a shame for a man to acknowledge poverty, but the greater shame is for him not to do his best to avoid it.” – Thucydides

What is truly important in your professional life?

The famous quote above from Steve Jobs, extracted from his majestic 2005 speech at Stanford University made me realize (while I was analyzing my own LinkedIn profile) something that I elaborate below about my professional experience.

I am a professional web developer, SEO/SEM specialist, eCommerce consultant and web entrepreneur, with over 23 years experience in Web Development and over a decade in Online Marketing.
What am I really experienced and have passion about?
The curious thing is that Linkedin itself helped me find out the answer to this question.  There is a section there called “Additional Info”. In fact this is not additional info but what I am truly experienced and have passion:

  • database driven systems,
  • E-commerce,
  • social media,
  • open source projects,
  • snowboarding,

These are indeed the things I could do for the rest of my life with no regrets and with the same motivation every day.

Case Study: Optimizing Staffing Business Processes With WordPress

So, today I finally launched a very large project that I have been working on for while. It’s a system for a Staffing company that hires people to work on events, promoting brands, they are called Brand Ambassadors.

The major problem, this client had, was handling hundreds, perhaps thousands, of documents. Each staff member had at least 3 documents attached to theirs profile. A contract agreement that had to be signed by both sides, a signed W-9 form and a direct deposit document.

The client needed a solution to simplify the staff registration. He also needed a simple way to handle the documents mentioned above. He also requested us to create a registration processes for his clients (Brands).

Another portion of the scope was the users dashboard. Where staff members after succesfuly logging in, could see/update theirs profiles, apply to events (previously entered by managers) and see the events they have been selected. Event selection is made by managers in the back-end of the site. Theirs clients also have a their own custom dashboard after succesfully registering and activated by managers afterwards.

For the events, every time there’s a new event, managers will have the option to notify the staff members that during the registration process are located or available at the event’s region/city.

The site also had to have improved search functionality, filtering and customization of the default wp-admin.

So the solution we found included:

  1. Use Gravity Forms for the registration pages (Clients and Staff). Including a multi-step form that allow save-for-later use and a PDF generation add-on;
  2. Use Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) and Custom Post Types (CPT) for events, clients and staff;
  3. Custom code to map Gravity Forms entries to ACF/CPT;
  4. Custom code to modify the events CPT to allow the users notifications;
  5. Custom built front end dashboards for all users and front-end form to allow update profiles;
  6. Custom built user based menus (meaning if user is a staff member will see menu items that are not available to others);
  7. Custom rule based login redirection.

On top of all the functionality above we also did:

  1. Redesigned the site;
  2. Made the site mobile friendly;
  3. Enforced HTTPS (ssl) across all the site’s pages;
  4. Redirected links to the old site to the new site.

A few challenges we encontered:

  1. Previous registered users had to be imported in to the new system;
  2. The site file size is growing super fast since every new staff application could upload 5 files (4 profile pictures + 1 resume);
  3. Security. We are storing sensitive information and had to make sure it was encrypted;

So the solution for the problems above:

  1. Created a custom coded script to load the previous registered users, formated them the right way and inserted in the database;
  2. Installed plugins to manage file size optimization;
  3. Installed security plugins and coded using best encryption practices.

  • Hosting: Godaddy VPS plan
  • WordPress Framework: Genesis
  • Theme: Executive Pro
  • Backup: BackupBuddy (Stored on Amazon S3).

Open Source Video Editing

I’ve been involved with video editing for quite sometime. I started back in 95/96 when I worked as production assistant and sometimes was also interviewing people for a daily touristic TV show in Brazil. Then after a long hiatus I got involved in the open source community and decided to volunteer at WordCamp.tv, editing WordCamp video presentations from around the globe. I am currently editing the videos for WordCamp Fortaleza 2016.

After all these years, I found out that there are some good tools that are free and open source for non-linear video editing. I will be giving the top 4 I liked the most reviews in the next posts soon. Here ate the top 4 Open Source Video Editing tools I like:
